Information and Referral Day

Join Us on November 16th for I&R Day

Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the help they need, when they need it.

What is Information & Referral (I&R) Day?

Information & Referral (I&R) Day, observed annually on November 16, is a time to reflect on the critical role that I&R professionals play in helping people find the services they need. But it is also a day to recognize a unique aspect of their work—something that sets them apart from many other helping professions: many I&R specialists never get to hear how their referrals change lives.

The work they do every day connects people to vital services, but what happens after they make the connection? Many I&R providers never know. That’s what makes I&R Day so important—it’s a time to celebrate the unseen impact of their work.

The Silent Heroes Behind Every Connection

Every day, I&R professionals field calls, texts, and emails from people in need. They guide individuals and families through the maze of social services, healthcare resources, housing programs, mental health support, and much more. For someone facing a crisis, being connected to the right resource at the right time can be life-changing.

Yet, once an I&R professional refers someone to the appropriate service, their job is done. Often, there is no follow-up, no feedback, and no story shared. Did the family find the housing they needed? Did the individual get the mental health support that made a difference? The I&R specialist rarely knows.

Despite this, I&R professionals carry on, helping person after person, day after day—believing in the value of their work without the reward of knowing the outcomes.

The Unheard Stories of Success

Imagine a mother in Halton calling an I&R specialist, overwhelmed by financial stress, struggling to provide for her children. She’s referred to local food banks, housing services, and mental health support. Thanks to those referrals, she finds the resources she needs to stabilize her family’s situation. It’s a success story—but one the I&R professional may never hear.

Or think about a senior citizen who’s feeling isolated and alone. They call a local I&R service, and they’re connected with a community program that provides companionship and support. Their life improves significantly—but the I&R specialist might never know.

These are the good news stories that happen every day thanks to the dedication of I&R professionals. The fact that they don’t often hear these stories only highlights the strength of their commitment. They work tirelessly without seeking recognition or praise, trusting that they are making a difference.

Why I&R Day Matters

I&R Day is a time to recognize the unseen impact of I&R services and the professionals who provide them. It’s a day to honour the resilience and dedication of those who work on the front lines of our communities, helping individuals and families access essential services—even when the outcomes of their efforts go unknown.

It’s also a reminder for all of us that behind every successful referral is a team of caring, knowledgeable professionals who devote themselves to supporting their communities. While they may not hear every good news story, they are the reason those stories happen.

Celebrating I&R Professionals

On November 16, 2024, as we celebrate I&R Day, let’s take a moment to show appreciation for these silent heroes. Their work may not always get the recognition it deserves, but its impact is felt in every corner of our communities.

So, how can we celebrate them?

The Work that Changes Lives, Even When We Don’t Hear About It

I&R Day is more than just a recognition of a profession—it’s a celebration of the thousands of lives changed through referrals that may never make headlines. Every I&R professional is a part of someone’s success story, even if they don’t hear the ending. And for that, they deserve our deepest gratitude.

This I&R Day, let’s celebrate the professionals who make a world of difference—often in ways they will never know.

Thank You to Our I&R Professionals!
